Matka Canyon

The ten caves in the picturesque ravine area surrounding Matka are particularly noteworthy, with lengths varying between 20 and 176 metres, and two vertical pits, up to 35 metres deep.

The Lake Matka originates from the man-made accumulation on the Treska River. It is the oldest man-made lake in Macedonia, the accumulation of which was constructed in 1938. The water of the lake is used for production of electrical energy, as well as for watering of the surrounding villages. The lake is stocked with fish and is often used for fishing.

There are several churches and monasteries in the canyon and the most significant is the monastery St Andreja. It is one of the rare monasteries where most of the inscriptions from the time of the erection and the painting of the church, significant for its history.
